Hi,
I have my iMac hooked up to an external audio interface via Firewire. Most of the time while I'm working, I listen to an internet radio station, which I have open in a separate browser window hidden behind the main browser window. If I need to quickly mute the sound – for instance, when I get a phone call – this is not always easy: I have to switch to the browser, then switch to the relevant browser window, then click on the 'stop' or 'mute' buttons on the internet radio player. I used to use a third party radio player app (Snowtape) with a customisable keyboard shortcut to mute and unmute the sound, but I had to stop using it; for some reason, it would no longer play nice with my favourite radio station once I upgraded to Lion.
So, my question: is there any way of setting up a system-wide keyboard shortcut that will toggle sound on and off?
Thanks,

Mail User Guide
If you receive email messages, such as in an active conversation, that are more bothersome than useful, you can mute them. If you change your mind later, you can easily unmute a conversation.
Mute conversations
In the Mail app on your Mac, select the conversation you want to mute.
Click the Mute button in the Mail toolbar.
/mac-how-to-whitelist-an-app-in-avast.html. The mute icon appears in the conversation’s messages in the message list.
The conversation stays in your Inbox but you aren’t alerted by a notification or sound when new messages in the conversation arrive.
You can set an option in Mail General preferences to automatically move a muted conversation to an archive or trash mailbox, depending on which one is available for your email account. Future messages in the conversation go to that mailbox instead of your Inbox.
Unmute conversations
In the Mail app on your Mac, select the conversation you want to unmute.
Click the Unmute button in the Mail toolbar.
The mute icon is removed from the messages in the conversation.
If you set the option to move muted conversations to the archive or trash mailbox, the conversation remains in that mailbox after you unmute the conversation.
