Brightness Control Mac App
By default, your Mac adjusts the screen brightness for current light conditions using the built-in ambient light sensor.
Set the brightness automatically
- Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Displays, then click Display.
- Select “Automatically adjust brightness.”
Since your display brightness is really a function built into the back-lit display hardware of your Mac, the best and easiest way to get that lower brightness setting that you can’t seem to find is by using an app on your Mac that can add a dark shade overlay over everything you see on the screen to give you the illusion that your display. This is another Mac-only app with a unique approach. Nocturne is an older display-altering app to reduce eye strain, but it does so by giving you options to change your display via using a monochrome scheme as pictured above, inverting colors, disabling shadow effects, and adjusting tints. You can adjust screen brightness as well.
Manually set the brightness
- Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Displays, then click Display.
- Drag the Brightness slider to adjust the brightness of your display.
Mac Brightness App
In certain low-light ambient lighting conditions, such as indoors, the default setting for automatic brightness on your display may limit the maximum brightness to a level that's below its absolute maximum. To set the brightness to the absolute maximum level in these lighting conditions, turn off “Automatically adjust brightness”, then set the brightness to the maximum level.
